Under New Management: Stephan Haroutunian Shirts

Since my last visit Stephan sadly decided to retire (the two events are unconnected). When the owner of an independent retailer decides to retire it usually spells the end of the business. This problem is particularly acute amongst tailors, where skills are almost never passed from father to offspring these days.

But, for every rule there is an exception, and I’m more than pleased to report that this oasis of good value and excellent shirt making has been placed into the very best of hands.

Erleand Norby

Those aforementioned hands belong to Erlend Norby, a very experienced and friendly chap worthy of mention in his own right. Norwegian by birth, Erland trained in both England and France as what the French call a modelist –someone who cuts and creates a suit. He was a cutter on Savile Row for six years, but he is expert in all manner of tailoring, right down to making bespoke ties. Having deciding to leave his Savile Row employer, when they began taking the brand in a different direction, he joined Stephan 2 years ago as a weekend deputy to familiarise himself with the business. The aim was always that their businesses and talents would combine.

Despite Stephans’ retirement the family connection remains firmly in tact. All the shirts continue to be made in the family’s workshop in Cyprus, just as they have for two generations. In fact this time I was able to take this wonderful picture of the original workshop which was founded by Stephan’s uncles and father. If you look carefully you should just be able to make out the inscription; “Your competitor can cut prices, but when you sell personal service he is up against it”.

I can also report no change in prices;

-Made to measure is still £69 and £79 depending on the fabric (no minimum order);

-Off the shelf shirts retail for £39, or two for £60 and four for £100; and

-Boxer shorts and bespoke pyjamas also remain, and continue to be made by the family in their worshop.

 

With Erlend’s experience on hand the shop offers an exceptional made-to-measure suit service with a starting price of just £490. All the bells and whistles are available; horn buttons, floating canvas; hand stitching -any detail you care to name. Indeed, I was so impressed I intend to have one made shortly after Christmas (any suit made before Christmas certainly won’t fit afterwards). So expect a review.

Overal it is clear that Erlend not only respects what Stephan tried to achieve but has a great affection for the business, ensuring the continuation of the best bits while augmenting and improving the services on offer. 

Small, intimate and unfussy

I cannot speak highly enough of this shop, and I’m pleased to say I can continue to do so. This time I can even show you pictures.

Quite simply this is a proper old fashioned shirt maker providing a good quality product and charging a reasonable price for it. £69 for an Egyptian, two-fold cotton, made-to-measure shirt, no minimum order, and beautifully made to boot.

However if you want to look like a bag of sh*t then we suggest that you go to the shops in the high streets around the country".
