A Better Foot Forward: Discount Shoe Sales

Wednesday 16 January 2008

Can I trust you? I do hope so; because the Discount Shoe Sales shop is one of London’s best kept secrets. You will never see this shop advertised. Indeed, I only discovered these guys by fluke some years ago. But I’ve never gone anywhere else since.

Just The Facts

Name: Discount Shoe Sales

A well established family owned business selling competitively priced Good Year welted and handmade shoes from some of England’s finest shoe makers.

Who you’ll meet: Dudley and his son Stephen

Location: 31 Strutton Ground, Westminster, London SW1P 2HY

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 9:30am-5:00pm

Website: www.discount-shoe-sales.com

Good Year Welted

I have an inherent distrust of men who wear comfortable shoes, particularly with suits. You know the sort I mean? School shoes, thick ungainly things with rubber soles and of suspect leather. We all suffer a shortage of funds at some time or another; but thanks to this family run business there is no excuse for sacrificing quality to economy. What they offer up are some of Northamptonshire’s best regarded shoe makers. That means  Good Year Welted  and handmade. For those unfamiliar with the term, welting is a method of construction that means, among other things, you can easily replace the soles of the shoe when worn out, thereby extending their life for years. Styles stocked Dudley include, casual and formal, polished leather or suede, Chelsea boots and lace-ups as well as standard issue Oxfords, Brogues and Penny Loafers.

If you’re looking to vary your wardrobe beyond the classics why not try the iconic American  G.H. Bass& Co. Weejan (moccasin loafer). Once again they carry a full range, from suede to tassels. My particular favourite is the original cherry reds, which worn with a blue suit adds a certain roguish quality.

However, if none of that takes your fancy they will do one off orders. This is particularly handy given many manufacturers now do multiple ranges of shoes with the quality differing substantially from the base range.

Competitive prices

The philosophy behind this place is a very simple one; supply quality men’s footwear at competitive prices. For that reason they never have sales; nor do they add on large mark-ups simply to discount it later. And don’t be under any misapprehension, despite the prices these are not factory seconds.

Dudley has been in the trade for 26 years, which shows in his expertise and enthusiasm for what he does. The service is excellent and whether you know something about shoes or nothing, ask and you will receive detailed knowledge of the product. Aided by his son Stephen this friendly outlet has a firmly established reputation amongst the Westminster crowd and beyond.

Do a little research and you will instantly see the benefit of this outlet. Just keep it under your hat!

Despite the fact that they are one of the last hand crafted leather goods makers left in England, you still may not have heard of Ettinger. And that, curiously, is also what makes them so special. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Robert Ettinger to discuss his company and its future plans

Family, Flair and Finesse: Nino's

Lots of people claim to offer something original, but the reality is few do. Not so with Nino's. While they produce elegant shirts in plain colours suitable for the office, the majority of the shirts are something a bit special. The sheer variety on offer beggars description.

The Italian Job: Volpe

An independent men's outfitter offering a complete wardrobe of understated, luxury clothing at affordable prices, under its own label. A European influence means rich colours, beautiful Italian fabrics and manufacturing, as well as an immaculate attention to detail. The guys here take real pride in what they do, which shows in both the warmth of the service and quality of the product. The coffee is excellent.

The Dog's Undercarriage: Adam of London

Before trotting through the door of Adam's take a look down to your left. You'll see the following sign, "All clothing for sale on these premises are exclusive to us in Great Britain. If you want to be exclusive and look the dogs bo**ocks please come in. However if you want to look like a bag of sh*t then we suggest that you go to the shops in the high streets around the country".

How to: Fold a Pocket Square

You either get pocket handkerchiefs or you don't. Personally, I love em. Few men in my age group wear them, so I make a point of doing so; separates the cads from the boys. Suffice to say this is the most straightforward (lots of diagrams) guide I've yet found, published or online, on how to fold all the variants for the pocket handkerchief.
